Promotional Plan
Introduction
I am creating a shortform video essay channel that hopes to explores film, music, art, and culture through storytelling and analysis. The channel aims to create content that encourages audiences to engage with media on a deeper level, moving beyond simple reviews to examine themes and cultural significance, whilst directly imbedding part of the content into the videos. Inspired by the storytelling and melancholy of John Green’s the Anthropocene reviewed and using a more documentary approach to wrap the content into a short package , the channel combines elements of criticism, journalism, and personal storytelling to create engaging content for social media audiences.
The main platform for my content is TikTok where I will post my shortform video essays twice a week. The content will also be repurposed for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts to maximise reach. Through a consistent content strategy, I aim to establish myself as a recognisable voice within online discussions surrounding film, music, and the arts.
Target Audience
The target audience for ALifeDirectedByTom consists primarily of young adults aged between 16 and 30 who are interested in Music, Film and Entertainment.
The audience is likely to include film enthusiasts, music fans, university students and creatives. Many viewers will already be familiar with creators who discuss and react too music and film, Such as TheEscapePodPodcast, WillTalksMusic and Straw_hat_goofy making them receptive to content that encourages critical thinking while remaining accessible and engaging.
As a creator based in Perth, Western Australia, I can connect with local arts communities. Whilst my content is designed for a broad online audience, discussing local artists, musicians, filmmakers, and cultural events can help distinguish the channel from larger international creators and establish a stronger sense of identity and community. Although in a different format the ame magazine on Instagram interviews Perth creatives and business owners helping build the arts identity in Perth which I would love to help with aswell.
Content Strategy
The content strategy for ALifeDirectedByTom is built around the concept of storytelling through analysis. Rather than simply reviewing films or albums, each video seeks to explore a broader idea or question. This approach aligns with the principles of social media storytelling by using narrative structures to create emotional and intellectual engagement.
Content will generally fall into three categories.
The first category is film analysis. These videos will examine themes, characters, filmmaking techniques, and cultural relevance. Topics may include discussions of why a film is so relatable or why it is so important currently.
The second category is music analysis. These videos will explore albums, artists, genres, and cultural movements, focusing on why particular works resonate with audiences and what they reveal about society and the musicians who make it
The third category is personal and essays. These will be wrapped into the other types of videos but wrapping my personal story and experiences into the video. This helps create a stronger relationship with viewers and helps develop a more distinctive voice.
This combination of analysis and storytelling helps differentiate from traditional review channels and positions me within the growing online video essay community.
Platform Strategy
TikTok will serve as my main platform for content. The platform's algorithm and emphasis on short-form video make it well suited to educational and analytical content. Videos will have a strong opening hooks to grab the audiences attention and have quickly well paced too hold attention.
As consistency is key for the algorithm content will be published twice per week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
To maximise the value of each piece of content, all videos will be repurposed and uploaded to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. This strategy increases the likelihood of discovery by reaching audiences who may not use TikTok while requiring minimal additional production work.
In the future, I hope to create some long-form videos for Youtube. These longer videos can allow for expanded essays on vaster topics. It also allows for more audience engagement and interest due to the higher barrier of entry
Promotion and Community Engagement
Promotion will focus primarily on organic audience growth through engagement and community participation. Each video will be reposted to my Instagram story as to creat additional jump of points too engage with the content.
Hashtags will also be used to increase discoverability. Examples include #FilmTok, #MusicTok, #VideoEssay, #FilmAnalysis, #PerthArts and anything specific to the content such as #OliviaRodrigo or #DCU These hashtags connect the content with established communities that are interested in similar topics.
In addition to where the content is originally posted I am also planning too, shared it within relevant online communities, including Reddit forums like R/DC_Cinematic or R/Community and discussion groups connected to the specific films, artists, or topics. By sharing content with these communities, I can further target people who have an interest in the subject matter.
Collaboration Strategy
I am hoping to engage with creators who produce similar content, particularly those local to Perth, both by joining the other creators on their videos/podcasts and also by finding musicians and filmmakers such as Dune Cartel, Lucinda Poy and Nightmare Narratives
Analytics and Evaluation
Analytics will play a significant role in shaping future content decisions. Social media platforms provide valuable information regarding audience demographics, watch time, engagement rates, and content performance.
Particular attention will be paid to identifying which types of content resonate most strongly with viewers. For example, if film-based essays consistently outperform music-related content, future production may place greater emphasis on cinema while maintaining a balance of subjects.
Success will be evaluated through a combination of quantitative and qualitative measures. Quantitative indicators include views, likes, comments, shares, saves, and follower growth. Qualitative indicators include audience discussions, community engagement, and the development of a recognisable brand identity.
The objective is not just to gain a following but also to build an engaged audience that participates in conversations surrounding film, music, and culture.
Monetisation Plan
Introduction
I intend to make money from ALifeDirectedByTom so I can continue to make quality content. As the accounts gain more followers, the content can be monetised through a combination of sponsorships, audience support, platform revenue, and publishing opportunities. By using multiple monetisation strategy’s the financial risks are smaller
Sponsorships and Brand Partnerships
The primary source of revenue for ALifeDirectedByTom will be sponsorships and brand partnerships. As the channel develops an audience interested in film, music, and culture, it will become attractive to organisations seeking to reach similar demographics.
Potential sponsors include streaming services, film distributors, music companies, publishers, arts festivals, cultural organisations, and creative software companies. These businesses frequently work with creators who have established trust and credibility within specific communities such as Supes or BlakeofToday
Unlike traditional influencer marketing, sponsorships I would be integrated into the channel's analytical style. Rather than simply promoting a product, sponsored content could involve creating video essays that analyse a film, album, book, or creative project. For example, a film distributor may sponsor a video discussing the themes and cultural relevance of a new release, while a publisher could support a video exploring the significance of a particular author or text.
This approach ensures that sponsorships remain relevant to the audience while generating revenue for the channel. Because viewers follow the channel for its analysis and storytelling, sponsored content must continue to provide educational and entertainment value.
This avoid audiences feeling like I am selling out the sponosrships will be stuff I genuinely believe in and wrapped directly into the content. As the audience grows, sponsorship rates can increase based on engagement, reach, and audience demographics.
Patreon Membership Program
Patreon will provide a recurring source of income by allowing viewers to financially support the channel directly. This revenue model is particularly suitable for video essay creators because it rewards long-term audience loyalty rather than relying solely on platform algorithms.
The Patreon program would offer several membership tiers. Entry-level supporters would gain access to updates and exclusive community posts, while higher tiers could include additional benefits such as behind-the-scenes content, production notes, Q&A sessions, and early access to videos.
One of the most valuable Patreon offerings would be insight into the creative process behind the essays. Supporters could access research notes, script drafts, editing breakdowns, and discussions about future projects. This content provides value for aspiring creators and viewers who are interested in the production process.
Monthly Q&A sessions would also encourage stronger audience engagement while providing additional incentives for membership. Patreon income would help cover production costs and provide a stable revenue stream independent of advertising or sponsorship arrangements.
Platform Monetisation
As ALifeDirectedByTom expands across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, platform monetisation programs will become an additional source of revenue.
YouTube is likely to provide the greatest earning potential through advertising revenue. Although the channel currently focuses on short-form content, future plans include producing long-form video essays. These longer videos are particularly well suited to YouTube's monetisation system because they encourage longer watch times and greater audience engagement.
YouTube advertising revenue can be generated through pre-roll advertisements, mid-roll advertisements on longer videos, and premium subscriber viewing.
TikTok and Instagram also offers creator monetisation opportunities however they are virtually non-existent in Australia and cannot be relied on as such platform revenue should only be viewed as a supplementary income source that works alongside sponsorships and audience-supported funding.
Publishing a Book
One of the most significant long-term monetisation opportunities is the publication of a book based on the channel's essays. Inspired by works such as John Green's The Anthropocene Reviewed or Algospeak by Adam Aleksic the book would adapt selected video essays into written form while expanding on their ideas and themes. I would also create some exclusive essay for the book as to give fans a reason to purchase it.
The transition from digital content to publishing provides several advantages. Firstly, it allows existing content to be repurposed into a new format. Secondly, it introduces the creator's work to audiences who may not engage with social media content. Thirdly, it creates an additional revenue stream through book sales.
The book could feature essays examining film, music, art, and culture while incorporating personal storytelling elements that connect the different pieces together. Because the essays would already have been tested through audience engagement online, the strongest concepts could be selected for publication.
Revenue would be generated through physical book sales, digital editions, audiobook versions, and potential publishing advances.
Speaking Engagements and Events
As the channel establishes a reputation within arts and culture spaces, opportunities may emerge for public speaking and event appearances.
These opportunities could include presentations at arts festivals, university events, creative conferences, and cultural organisations. Topics could focus on storytelling, video essay production, film analysis, social media content creation, or arts journalism.
Speaking engagements provide direct revenue through appearance fees while also promoting the channel to new audiences. They can also strengthen the creator's professional reputation and lead to additional opportunities within the creative industries. Such as writing for reputable companies or creating my own films
Future Revenue Opportunities
As the brand develops, additional monetisation opportunities may become available. These could include merchandise or an online workshops. Workshops will focused on video essay production, storytelling, and content creation could appeal to aspiring creators interested in developing similar skills. While these opportunities are not immediate priorities, they demonstrate the scalability of the ALifeDirectedByTom brand beyond social media content alone.
Conclusion
The monetisation strategy for ALifeDirectedByTom focuses on creating multiple revenue streams that support the continued production of video essay content. Sponsorships, Patreon memberships, platform monetisation, book publishing, and speaking engagements provide a diverse range of income opportunities while remaining consistent with the channel's identity.
By building an audience through thoughtful storytelling and cultural analysis, the channel can establish a sustainable business model that generates revenue while maintaining the quality and authenticity of its content. Through a combination of short-term and long-term monetisation strategies, ALifeDirectedByTom has the potential to evolve from a social media channel into a broader creative brand.
