Third Places

Third Places used to be common. pubs, cafes, book clubs that sort of thing. but now days they have sort of died out, especially among young people. you’re more likely to hang out at home than outside. theres an argument that online spaces like discord, minecraft or even facebook have replaced them but it’s not the same. the point of a third place is so you can meet new interesting individuals, universities are basically the final version that exists now which sucks.

The Public Sphere is a concept ive been taught in uni and whilst it is simlar to third places its key difference is it has translated to the internet, arguably it fits more. but third places don’t. I went to a pub recently and it was fun, me and a friend chatting and eating (becuase neither of us drink but that doesn’t really matter) but it was nothing like the cafes and pubs in sitcoms such as how I met your mother or friends where people are constantly meeting up and dicussing life. i reckon we need to go back to that. so if you are reading this and you wanna hang out, let’s get together some friends and go to a pub (I’ll drive)
